High Vibes in the Home: your guide to spiritual cleansing

In our quest to banish negativity from our living spaces we come across a few different methods. Two of the most effective ways to spiritually cleanse your home is with smudging herbs (natural incense) and crystals.

Why you should cleanse your home

Our homes are sacred and central spaces in our lives. What we carry from the outside world can penetrate our homes. Negative energy seeps in from everywhere. Your house may be physically clean, but unseen negative energy can be generating adverse effects on your health and wellbeing. Geopathic Stress (distorted or disrupted electromagnetic fields of the Earth) is also a factor in determining the clarity and peace of the home. These factors are relieved by spiritual cleansing.

So What is Smudge?

It seems like everywhere you look lately someone is talking about smudging; how you can use it in your home to clear negative energy or to cleanse your crystals. Smudging is a term used by indigenous American peoples that describes a sacred ritual using smoke. From powwow-power.com "The smudging ceremony is a custom of Native American and other indigenous cultures. For centuries many cultures have used smudging as a way to create a cleansing smoke bath that is used to purify the body, aura, energy, ceremonial/ritual space or any other space and personal articles. Smudging is performed to remove negative energy as well as for centering and healing. Our bodies and environments are not only physical but vibrate with invisible, silent energy". Due to this practice being deeply spiritual in nature it is more culturally sensitive to refer to this practice as "Smoke Cleansing" or "Spiritual Cleansing".

Smoke cleansing, herbal incense, and Smudge sticks are all related. Simply put: spiritual cleansing is a technique which calls upon the attributes herbs and plants to drive away negative energy and to restore balance to an individual, a group, a space, or all three. Smoke is used to bless, cleanse and heal the person or object. Traditionally White Sage is used to 'wash off' the outside world when one enters ceremony or other sacred space.  Typically, herb used is sage, but many different herbs and plants can be used in smoke cleansing. I do not use Sage as it has a very strong "herbal" smell that can be mistaken for a certain recreational drug. I would rather not be associated with this particular "herb" on the premise that it is still illegal in my state of Kentucky. Other popular options you can use for cleansing are:

  • Sweetgrass
  • Lavendar, Rosemary, or Raspberry Leaf
  • Cedar
  • Palo Santo
  • Sandalwood

How to Smoke Cleanse

Smoke cleansing is done with a fire safe bowl or Abalone Shell with your loose chosen herbs directly lit or burned on a Charcoal Tablet. When using charcoal tablets, the bowl or shell should be filled with sand or a flat stone to prevent overheating the container. Cleansing herbs are also usual tied in bundles or can be loose leaf. The smoke from these sacred herbs should be wafted through your space in each room. The smoke cleanses your home and clears any negative built up energy. Creating your own personal blend makes the cleansing more catered to you and your spiritual energy. You can buy dried herbs from holistic shops near you or online to craft your own special blend.

Cleansing with Crystals

Every crystal channels energy in their own unique way. These high vibration stones can release positive energy while repelling negativity. However, some crystals are more suited to cleansing the home than others.

Selenite

Selenite is one of only two crystals that never need cleansing and can cleanse other crystals as well. Selenite comes in two main forms: the selenite wand or stick and the selenite tower. The wand can be waved throughout the home in every room. There should be special attention paid to doorways, corners, and windows. Corners are especially prone to accumulating negative energy which can greatly affect many aspects of your life. Placing a selenite tower in your home especially in a central space or near a window will channel positive energy into the home while filtering built up negativity.

Black Tourmaline

This black stone is well suited for protecting and grounding, but it is also useful for clearing geopathic stress and reducing the negative effects of electronic devices. Placing a black tourmaline near your front door and in areas where there is a high volume of electronic devices (like your living room or office) can clear concentrations of negativity.

Kyanite

Kyanite has an innate ability to clear all chakras. This powerful cleansing ability can also be used in the home. Kyanite never needs to be cleansed itself because it it a powerful conductor of cleansing vibration. This blue crystal brings a calming and clarifying effect to the whole home. Placing this stone at your front door will cleanse you of any negative energy you may have been exposed to throughout the day.

Placing a selenite tower in your home especially in a central space or near a window will channel positive energy into the home while filtering built up negativity.
You can use both methods together to fully cleanse your space. Spiritual Cleansing of the home should be done at the beginning of every season and whenever your home despite being physically clean still somehow feels unclean. It is also a good idea to to do after a party or any other time a large group of people may have visited your home.
